My Makeup Evolution Over The Years

Makeup has been a firm part of my life since I hit my teenage years, and something I have enjoyed using to create new looks through my adult life.

With the likes of Facebook bringing up daily memories of posts through the years, it made me not only cringe, but also laugh at how I used to apply makeup when I was younger.

Up until the age of 18, makeup was banned in my parents house. They preferred me to focus on my education, whilst keeping my skin clean and clear.

Back then, I knew this rule annoyed the hell out of me. Literally every other girl at school was either wearing foundation, rocking some eyeliner or slicking their lips with lip gloss. Whilst I stood out like a sore thumb, the nerdy glasses (which were certainly not on trend back when I was in school!), clean skin (i.e. no makeup whatsoever), literally cringing because I couldn’t cover up a breakout.

Luckily for me, however, my skin was fairly clear when I was younger, and there weren’t many days where by I felt like I could do with a bit of coverage. I was also able to hide behind my glasses whilst I was in school, which acted as a barrier.

My makeup evolution over the years has been one full of many lessons, I got it wrong A LOT, I went through phases, even now, I’m trying and testing different looks.

Roll forward to when I finally turned 18, and I was finally able to experiment with makeup. The glasses came off, and contact lenses came on. Slowly but surely, I built up a collection of makeup items, starting with mascara, clear lip-glosses, and some of the darkest eyeliner I’ve ever seen. Back then, the emo look was so in – yes, I’m cringing right now.

Some of my notable makeup mishaps was actually using bronzer as a foundation – yes, I know! Little did I know I was literally walking around like an oompa loompa a lot of the time. But I rocked it, I felt confident and I felt good – so what did I care?

When I did eventually realise that bronzer was not the way forward, even my foundation was off colour – it was either too dark for me, or way too light. My early years of wearing makeup was a lot of eyeliner, black eye shadow and off-shade foundation.

Moving on to my early twenties, it was all about the nude lip. Thin eyebrows and nude pink lipstick. This was the start of my obsession with drugstore makeup. Out went the dark eyeliner, and black eye-shadow, in came the cat flick eyes, which I still do daily now.

Over the years when I spent my time perfecting my cat flick, I experimented a lot more, Trying out concealers, makeup hacks, and different colours on my lips. I was never a fan of lipstick, and still aren’t – I’m more of a lip-gloss girl. Up until recently, I wore glossed lips, now I stick to my favourite matte purple shade by NYX – Embellishment.

I’m so glad that I did actually experiment with makeup whilst I was younger, and although I may cringe at the thought of some of my old looks, at least I know what works for me now.
